In April 2020, the TMCC Community mourned the tragic passing of Mighty Lizards Assistant Coach Gonzalo Lopez from complications of COVID-19. In remembrance of Lopez's life and legacy, TMCC Athletics, in partnership with the Lopez family and TMCC donors, initiated the Gonzalo Lopez Memorial Scholarship. As TMCC's first athletic scholarship, it would be awarded each year to two returning student-athletes who best represent TMCC Soccer and exemplify the leadership and goodwill displayed by Lopez during his 25-year coaching career.

This fall, TMCC Athletics recognized Luis Chavez and Taylor Gunther as the two student-athletes who would receive the inaugural scholarship.

Chavez, a midfielder studying Athletic Training, joined TMCC as a freshman in fall 2019 from nearby North Valleys High School. As a member of the Mighty Lizards, he has been an outstanding example of professionalism and discipline. Like many others on TMCC's inaugural squad he grew extraordinarily close to Lopez, making this honor extra special to him.

Gunther, a Dental Hygiene major, also joined the Mighty Lizards for their inaugural season. A consistent leader for the women's squad, she has always provided a great example in her focus and work ethic for her teammates to follow. She dedicates this upcoming season to the Lopez family, and all of the donors who made this scholarship possible.
