RENO, Nevada (October 21, 2021)- TMCC's men got back in the win column with a 1-0 victory over Feather River College on Thursday evening.
A massive save from
Brandon Espino to stop a Feather River penalty just after the second half got underway and an 85th minute score from
Jaden Roig would give the Mighty Lizards the victory in their second straight non-conference contest.Â
A back and forth first half was kept scoreless by excellent defense from the Mighty Lizards. After a save from
Sean Lucas kept the Golden Eagles out of the net just five minutes in, TMCC's defense would block an excellent chance from Feather River's Issacco Tomelleri in the 17th minute.
Feather River nearly pulled ahead just after the half hour mark. After a set piece opportunity was stopped by Lucas, Tomelleri followed up on the rebound from close range only to find his attempt stopped by Lucas again. The second-year keeper finished the first half with an impressive seven saves to keep things scoreless heading into the break.
Sophomore
Ben Linnert was excellent up front for TMCC after entering for
Cameron Kornock just three minutes into the match. Linnert finished with three shots, and nearly put TMCC ahead in the 66th minute when an attempt from the right was stopped by a great save from Golden Eagles goalkeeper Alex Saunders.
A foul from TMCC's
Jacob Duran gave Feather River a penalty 10 minutes after the half. However, TMCC's
Brandon Espino, who entered for Lucas at halftime, came up with a phenomenal save to deny the Golden Eagles' Taijo James, keeping the 0-0 tie intact.Â
Feather River would go down to ten men in the 78th minute, when Kian Binns was shown a red card for a hard foul on
Wilmer Hernandez-Parra.
TMCC continued to threaten as the contest continued, but was unable to break through despite great looks on goal from
Allen Somera and
Ben Linnert. However, just as the match seemed destined to head to extra time, right back
Brady Payton found
Jaden Roig on a long ball from the right wing, leaving Roig with just one man to beat. The first year forward would punch one through to give TMCC the lead on his sixth goal of the season.Â
Following their 1-0 win, the Mighty Lizards will resume action this Saturday when they welcome Colorado Northwestern Community College to close out the 2021 season. Kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m., and the match will be streamed live on the Lizards Sports Network. Following the match, the Mighty Lizards will recognize their outgoing sophomores for both Men's and Women's Soccer.
