RECAP: Women’s Soccer Secures First-Ever Win over CSN

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (October 9, 2021)- TMCC's women emerged victorious on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Southern Nevada Coyotes 1-0 to mark the first ever win for Women's Soccer over their in-state rivals.

Emily Mendoza-Obeso's third score in two matches was all TMCC would need, giving the Mighty Lizards a 48th minute advantage they would keep a hold of for the remainder of the contest.

The Mighty Lizards took advantage of space in the attacking third constantly during the match, and controlled the middle third over their rivals with ease. Excellent play from TMCC's attacking unit kept CSN's back line on their heels all day long, logging ten shots and keeping the pressure on for all 90 minutes.

Freshman Katelyn Norris nearly put TMCC up early, after fielding a well-placed ball from Yanitzia Perez-Galvan at the top of the penalty area. The forward found herself with space to strike from close range, but her attempt was neutralized by excellent defensive work from the Coyotes.

TMCC caught a break in the 15th minute, when CSN midfielder Geraldi Rivera went one-on-one with Mighty Lizards back Jenna Bosetti. Rivera's shot would go off the post and into the arms of goalkeeper Stella Poste, who logged six saves to lead TMCC to their second clean sheet in as many matches.

Just moments after the start of the second half, TMCC finally was able to break through, pulling ahead 1-0 in just the 48th minute. After clearing out a great chance for the Coyotes, Midfielder Emily Mendoza-Obeso would find the net for her third goal for the road trip, assisted by Mia Takekuma. Mendoza-Obeso would finish the contest tied for a team-high two shots.

While the hosts would threaten, most notably in the 64th minute when a great save from Poste kept the Coyotes out of the net, TMCC's defense held strong to secure their third shutout performance of the season. Poste added another crucial save in the 75th minute, stopping a great look from a free kick outside the penalty box.

Following their undefeated road-trip, TMCC's women will return home for a non-conference meeting with Lake Tahoe Community College on October 12. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. and the match will be streamed live on the Lizards Sports Network.
