Reno, Nev.— Sometimes, you have to wait for the dice to roll your way.
Coming in to Thursday's home opener, the TMCC Men faced one of the toughest realities in soccer. An excellent showing against the Snow College Badgers on April 10 had resulted in a heartbreaking 0-1 loss in extra time to the NJCAA's 11th ranked team. Despite playing a phenomenal match, the sting of defeat had to ride with them for 10 hours from Ephraim, UT back home to Reno.
However, after strong showings in their first two matches, the Lizards remained confident. TMCC's Men would take a 1-0 extra time victory of their own in their home opener against the Utah State University Eastern Eagles.
The Lizards dominated their opponent's offensive third from the opening whistle, posting 22 shots from 11 different players in the 1-0 win. Second year midfielder
Efrain Mayorga-Quitiero led the way for the Lizards offensive attack, posting a game high five shots and having his way with Eagles defenders throughout the first half. First-year midfielder
Allen Somera was also excellent, posting three shots (two on goal), and generating chance after chance to keep the Eagles defensive unit busy all night.
The Lizards caught a couple of big breaks late, as shots from USUE midfielder Parker Huff would sail just high in the 78th minute and glance of the post in the 96th minute.
Second-year defender
Alfredo Robles-Rodriguez would seal the deal in the 102nd minute, finding the net after Eagles goalkeeper Rhys Picton couldn't corral a hard shot by Lizards midfielder
Allen Somera.
TMCC will welcome Colorado Northwestern Community College (Craig, CO) to Reno for their fourth match of the season on April 17.
