Reno, Nev.- Despite putting up a solid effort in their second straight contest with no substitutes, the Lizards were no match for the NJCAA's sixth-ranked team on Thursday. Much like last Saturday's rough go in Salt Lake City, TMCC would again finish with just ten players on the field after injury concerns continued to plague
Geoff Hawkins' already thin roster.
While the Badgers would get on the board early, a third minute score off of a corner kick from midfielder Rine Yohana would be the only blemish for TMCC in the first half. The Lizards played excellent defense in the opening 45, doing a much better job containing the Badgers physical attacking unit, and seemed much more comfortable in the midfield with the return of sophomore Yalison Espinosa. The Lizards came close to drawing even mid-way through the opening period, but an unlucky bounce at the feet of midfielder Yanitzia Perez-Galvan and a blocked shot from forward Emily Mendoza-Obeso would allow the Badgers to maintain their advantage in to the break.
Health would bite TMCC hard as the afternoon progressed, as the challenge of having no substitutes would begin to wear on the starting eleven. The Badgers kept Lizards goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mendoza busy for the entirety of the second period, posting 13 shots to the Lizards two and finding the net four times.
Mendoza, who had played every minute coming into today's contest, exited with an injury with 10 minutes remaining and was replaced by Freshman back Kennedy Ficklin. TMCC has lost defender Tara Dragoo and midfielder Maria Villa-Cabrera for the season to knee injuries sustained on April 24 against Salt Lake CC and April 10 against Snow College.
TMCC returns to action this Saturday, May 1 when they welcome in-state rival Southern Nevada for a rematch of the 2021 season-opener.
