One year ago on Sept. 19, 2019, TMCC took on their in-state rival, the College of Southern Nevada (Henderson, NV), for the very first time.
On a sunny Thursday afternoon, two highly anticipated matches between the community colleges representing Northern and Southern Nevada in athletics yielded a day to remember. With bragging rights on the line, the players, coaches, administrators, and supporters of each institution all held as high expectations as they did emotions, ready for the first ever athletic competition between the two programs.
In the afternoon's first action, a 10 save performance from goalkeeper Brendin Lane headlined a 0-0 draw for the TMCC men. The match was filled with intensity, as many TMCC and CSN players were facing off against former teammates and friends for the first time on a college field. Women's Soccer, despite falling to the Coyotes 1-3, had their afternoon defined by grit and perseverance, battling admirably to stay within striking distance until an 84
th minute score sealed a CSN victory.
"The day was filled with all kinds of emotion for both squads," recalled TMCC head coach
Geoff Hawkins, who led CSN's soccer program from 2016-2019. "You could tell that the matches meant a great deal to everyone, and there was a lot of positive competitive spirit. Everyone on the field wanted really badly to win."
Going into the second season for TMCC soccer, the prospect of playing CSN remains on the minds of both squads. After all, continuing the rivalry between the two programs is almost natural.
