Reno, Nev. — In a way, the Lizards victory on Saturday afternoon was a chance to make up for their three tough losses to open the Spring 2021 season.
After an 0-3 stretch to start the year saw the TMCC Women outscored 13-1, they rebounded mightily with a 9-0 drubbing of conference foe Colorado Northwestern Community College to secure their first win of the season.
TMCC took control of the match early, striking first on a score from second-year midfielder
Yanitzia Perez-Galvan just 3 minutes in. Freshman back
Colby Bera would find the net just four minutes later, putting the Lizards up 2-0 on an impressive shot from 35 yards out.
The two scores would set the tone for the remainder of the match, which would see TMCC dominate possession and put 22 of 35 shots on goal. All but one of the Lizards' field players would see scoring chances, with second-year midfielder
Yalison Espinosa leading the way with 8 shots, and sophomore
Piper Wiecking posting two scores on six chances. TMCC would keep Spartans goalkeeper Janice Veloz busy, as 8 different Lizards would find the back of the net before the final whistle sounded.
CNCC was simply unable to overcome constant mistakes, and had trouble in their defensive third all morning long. In the victory, the Lizards would post their first clean sheet of the year behind another good defensive showing, having their way with Colorado Northwestern attackers for the entire 90 minutes.
TMCC faces a tough test in their next match, a Saturday afternoon meeting with Salt Lake Community College on April 24.
