RENO, Nev. — The banners are up. The court is ready. The lights will shine a little brighter.

And when the first serve goes into the air at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, 2026, Truckee Meadows Community College volleyball will make history.

The Mighty Lizards will take the court at the TMCC Sports and Fitness Center for their first-ever Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) match, hosting North Idaho College in a a major milestone for TMCC athletics.

TMCC enters the contest with a 2-2 record, while North Idaho arrives at 9-4. Both teams will be looking to begin conference play on the right foot, but for the Mighty Lizards, there is something even bigger at stake.

This isn't just another game. It's the beginning of a new era.

The SWAC has built a reputation as one of the nation's strongest junior-college volleyball conferences, with its programs producing multiple national championships over the years. Now, TMCC is stepping onto that stage for the first time.

And the historic debut will happen at home.

Friday night's match will be the first home volleyball game in TMCC history, giving the newly built TMCC Sports and Fitness Center its own historic moment.

The modern facility represents the continued growth of athletics at the College and provides the Mighty Lizards with a home of their own as they begin their new conference journey.

For Athletic Director Geoff Hawkins, reaching this moment is the result of years of student interest and institutional support. "This moment is the culmination of student desire for more athletic programs and the administration's continued support for athletics and listening to student voices," Hawkins said.

Now, that vision moves from planning to competition.

Standing across the net will be a North Idaho team that brings a 9-4 record into Reno. The Cardinals will look to draw on their experience and strong start to the season as they begin their SWAC campaign.

TMCC will counter with the energy of its home crowd and the excitement of being part of a historic night.

For the players wearing the Mighty Lizards uniform, there will be no need to manufacture motivation.

They are the first.

The first TMCC volleyball team to compete in the SWAC. The first to play a conference match inside the new Sports and Fitness Center. The first group with the opportunity to establish the foundation for what the College hopes will become a lasting volleyball tradition.

The final score will determine who walks away with the first conference victory.

But before the final whistle, there will be a moment worth remembering.
