Box Score Reno, Nev.- A tale of two halves would go against the Lizards on Saturday against Salt Lake Community College.
TMCC played excellent in the opening period, keeping the potent offensive attack of the Bruins at bay and doing a fantastic job maintaining possession. Despite a 35
th minute score from the Bruins Paul Richnow, TMCC looked to be on their way to a possible upset of the Scenic West leader and the nation's #2 ranked squad. Three excellent saves from goalkeeper
Brendin Lane would keep the deficit at one heading into the break.
The final 45 minutes would be troublesome for TMCC, as the inconsistency that has plagued them over the last few weeks returned and allowed the Bruins to stretch their advantage. SLCC midfielder Omar Gomez would find the net in the 57
th minute on a chip shot that would sneak by Lizards back
Ryan Rutherford. A foul from sophomore
Erick Ceja-Gonzalez resulted in a penalty for the Bruins, which was converted by forward Kai Phillip.
Similar to TMCC's first matchup with Salt Lake, their focus began to wane as the match wore on. The Lizards inability to execute and frequent mental mistakes was a cause for concern, much like in their previous three matches.
Despite the loss, a Snow College victory over Utah State Eastern on Wednesday clinched the Lizards their first playoff berth in program history. They will travel to Herriman, UT for the NJCAA Region XVIII tournament on May 18 and 19.
