Powell, Wyo. — TMCC's women came away from their 2021 season opener with a 2-1 victory over Northwest College (Powell, Wyoming) on Friday.
After a competitive opening 45 minutes, TMCC pulled ahead with its first score of the season mid-way through the second half. Sophomore
Emily Mendoza-Obeso carried the ball from the back through multiple Trapper defenders before punching one in to put the Mighty Lizards up 1-0.
"We played with a lot of grit today," said TMCC Head Coach
Geoff Hawkins. "I think it was really important to get the nerves of our first game and our first win out of the way. Today definitely showed the character we have as a team."
The Mighty Lizards defense had a strong day, limiting Northwest's chances for most of the afternoon. While the Trappers would answer back to pull even around the 75 minute mark, they kept things clean in the back for first year keeper
Stella Poste, who did well in her first match with TMCC.
Freshman
Kamryn Harper would net the game-winner for TMCC just 10 minutes remaining. The midfielder would convert on a long range shot after finding space in the middle of the field. Harper and TMCC's contingent of new faces impressed in their first exposure to the collegiate level, showing excellent decision making and poise in their first career appearances.
The Mighty Lizards have a quick turnaround, as they will take on the Trappers again Saturday morning at 8 a.m. PT in the finale of their season-opening road trip.
